Small Lung-ch'uan Celadon Tripod Censer 12th century (Southern Song)
Compressed body censer with shallow flanges rising on the shoulder and
continuing down the splayed leg supports. The wide mouth has a short out-cropped
flared rim, and the whole is covered inside and out with matte pale gray-green
glaze.
CONDITION:
Fine with no chips, breaks or fractures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Height 3.25 in
Shoulder 4.5 in
Top Rim 3.25 in
REMARKS: The name Lung-ch'uan and the term "celadon" are almost synonymus
because of the great quantity of clasical celadon wares made at Lung-ch'uan
during the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties.
The hard body, resonant ring, simple shapes, and jade-like color of Lung-ch'uan
ware created universal appeal and made it immediately recognized as a
unique item, overriding most porcelins of the period.
Its interesting to note that lower quality Lung-ch'uan celedons went to
export, while finer examples, such as this one, remained in country for
local and imperial use.
