Fine Rare Powder Blue Jar
18th/19th century

Ovoid, non-export jar, unmarked on rim. Covered with powder blue underglaze and over glaze decoration in gold around cleared calligraphy motif representing "longevity" and "happiness". Two reserved panels painted in famile verte enamels show, on one side, the eight immortals in a celestial boat and a female pathion riding the phoenix. The calligraphy on the other side houses boys playing with a variety of sporting and musical instruments.
The painting is carefully done, exhibiting great attention to detail.

Lare jars of this type and quality are rare. A similar example from a Dresden collection is illustrated by Pietsh.
